Long before Philadelphia scored their first Super Bowl win, Philly cheesesteaks were already a game day classic. Loaded with steak and melted cheese and piled high with peppers and onions, this sandwich is iconic for a reason.

Unfortunately, like most tailgate food, this greasy, cheesy hoagie isn’t exactly health food. Better news? These Low-Carb Philly Cheesesteaks are a cleaned up, lightened up version of the classic game day sandwich.

This low-carb recipe still has all the juicy steak and melted cheese you love. But instead of heavy bulkie rolls, this recipe uses thick, crunchy bibb lettuce. Meanwhile, lean meat and low-fat provolone will also help you avoid that heavy feeling cheesesteaks usually leave you with. This light, clean recipe has all the game day flavor you love without the heavy overeating you’ll regret post game.

Bye Bye Bread

Low-Carb Philly Cheesesteaks

I know there are some die-hard bread lovers out there, but honestly, if bread is the best part of your sandwich, it’s probably a pretty bad sandwich. They way I see it, bread is really just an annoying obstacle separating me from the main event.

You know when you go to a restaurant and there’s that one buzzkill who’s like, “Don’t fill up on bread!” Well, that buzzkill is right. That bread is just trying to come between you and the main course. The same thing is true when it comes to sandwiches. The bread is just getting in the way.

To me, nothing is worse than an overly bready sandwich. This is especially true of cheesesteaks, which often use huge, fluffy rolls. All that bread just adds tons of extra carbs and calories, and pretty much nothing else.

These Low-Carb Philly Cheesesteaks cut out that unnecessary bread altogether. And without all that excess fluff in the way, you can taste all the rich, hearty flavors this sandwich has to offer.

With thin sliced sirloin steak and sautéed peppers and onions, this sandwich oozes with rich, savory flavor, not fat and grease. Fat-free provolone completes this delicious filling with the gooey, melty cheese that really makes a Philly cheesesteak.

If you’re a cilantro lover, finish these Low-Carb Philly Cheesesteaks off with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. Serve hot for the perfect clean, low-carb game day meal. A twenty minute recipe, these healthy cheesesteaks are easy to throw together during halftime so you can have dinner on the table before the third quarter.
